Saint Expedit
The prayers of the nine days of the novena are always :
1- Preceded by the following prayer: "O Saint Expedit, I come to you, imploring your prompt assistance, so that your powerful intercession may obtain for me from the infinite goodness of the Lord the help that I most humbly solicit from his divine mercy.
2- Followed by the invocation: "O Christ, protect us, tomorrow and always, but especially today". And three Our Fathers, three Hail Mary, three Glories of the Father.
Day 1: Youth.
O Saint Expedit, who in your youth sacrificed your life for the greater glory of Christ our God, obtain for us, by the merits of your martyrdom, that throughout our lives our souls may be illuminated by a candid purity. "Unless you change and become like children, said Our Lord, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven". O Saint Expedit, help us therefore, through your powerful intercession, to acquire this spirit of simplicity of intention and purity of affection towards our heavenly Father. Pray for me, Holy Expeditionary One, for me who is growing old in sin and whose ill-controlled passions are withering my soul and staining it with so many offences against its Creator and Redeemer. Grant that I may enjoy eternal youth from this world, so that "with clean hands and a pure heart I may be worthy to ascend the mountain of the Lord and to stand in his holy place". Therefore, if my hand is a stumbling block, help me to cut it off; if my eye is a stumbling block, help me to pluck it out, so that my purified heart may shine under grace like crystal in the sunlight. Thus "God will love me and bring me into his house".
May the Blessed Virgin, perfect purity, deign to intercede for us with her divine Son. AMEN.

O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you.
Saint Expedit, patron saint of youth, pray for us.
Three, Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory be to the Father.
Day 2: Courage
O Saint Expedit, whose sword broke the divine praise, which exalted from your lips at the very threshold of death, help us to remain always faithful to the Lord. Whatever the opprobrium, the insults, the threats, teach us to overcome our contemptible self-love, the cause of so much cowardice and sometimes of perjury. "If an army should array itself against me, let not my heart fear. "Let proud men rise up against me, let violent men seek my life, who do not put God before their eyes, but God will help me, the Lord is the support of my life. Without God's grace, I remain without strength and courage In the Garden of Olives, the apostles fled... But I, who so often imitate them, with whom am I? With Jesus or with Judas? Have I not denied my Master more than three times? Have I never betrayed him? No, I have not yet "resisted to the point of blood".
O Saint Expedit, whatever happens, help me to fight valiantly, for "to refuse to fight is to refuse the crown".
May the Blessed Virgin, with her superhuman courage, support and guard us. AMEN.

Saint Expedit, faithful unto death, pray for us.

Day 3: Promptness
O Saint Expedit, whose name reminds us that we must never put off praying until tomorrow, O you who crushes the sinister crow that always invites us to wait and delay, grant that from now on, without hesitation or laziness, I may spontaneously obey the will of the Lord, so that he may be served without delay and always with love, for "he who loves runs, flies and nothing stops him".
The Lord is continually present at our side, immanent in us, ready to answer our prayers, to save us by offering to snatch us from the temptations of sin... And would I dare to measure my actions, my obedience, my dedication, my sacrifice to him, who did not even deserve to be, instead of rushing forward filled with zeal and love at his first call? The imitation says: "What keeps consolations away from us is that we turn to prayer too late". "Like lightning...so will be the coming of the Son of Man.
O Saint Expedit, may this prophecy always remind me that I too must be quick to watch, so that when the Master returns he will not find his servant asleep and without oil in his lamp, like the foolish virgins!
May the Blessed Virgin, who spontaneously responded Fiat to the Lord's request, exalt us and help us. AMEN.

O Mary, channel of all graces, pray for us.
Saint Expedit, our help in pressing matters, pray for us.
Three, Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory be to the Father.
Day 4: Justice
"As the Lord also justified and glorified you, O holy Expedite, we have recourse to your faithful intercession to obtain from our heavenly Father the infinitely precious grace that he reserves for his chosen ones. When a touch of divine love comes to touch our soul, under the influence of the grace which blooms in us, we believe that we are already chosen, whereas we are still only privileged... Remove from us, Saint Expedit, this deceitful thought which risks losing us, and instead fill our spirit with a salutary fear of divine justice, allowing our hope to rest only in the infinite mercy of the Lord. It is only by this that we can obtain justification, for our perverse nature is unworthy of the least merit. It is by repentance of our faults that we shall find grace before the supreme judge, and not by the exaltation of our works. Help me always to remember that whatever I do I must consider myself a useless and unworthy servant.
May the Blessed Virgin, mirror of justice, protect and help us. AMEN.

O Mary, Queen of saints, pray for us.
Saint Expedit, who has earned the kingdom of heaven, pray for us.
Three, Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory to the Father.
Day 5: Humility
O Saint Expedit, it was in the humble attitude of prayer, kneeling and with a low forehead, that the sword came to tear you from this life! As a young and honoured leader of the legion, you nevertheless knew how to despise these ephemeral vanities in order to pick up the palm of martyrdom, which no one will ever be able to take from you, and before which the divine heart of Our Lord will tremble with an eternal love. Teach me, Saint Expedit, to become humble, to overcome all that pride which bubbles up in me... "What is the use of conquering the world, if you lose your soul? O holy Expedit, pray to the Lord to preserve his servant, so that pride does not rule over me, then I will be upright and pure from great sins... Help me, O most glorious Saint, to imitate him who was meek and lowly in heart, and who in order to redeem us, he, the Son of God, did not hesitate to descend to the lowest, most despicable level of our human condition, to die there under the infamous torture of the cross. Let me never expect to have made any progress until I believe myself to be firmly below all others.
O Christ, protect us tomorrow and always, but especially today.
O Mary, Refuge of sinners, pray for us.
Saint Expedit, who was scourged, pray for us.
Three, Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory to the Father.
Day 6: Renunciation
"Leave everything and you will find everything"... O Saint Expedit, you who knew how to understand the absolute meaning of this promise, "losing everything to gain Jesus Christ", pray for us, that we too may come to this detachment from all the goods of this world.
If you want to come with me," said Christ, "leave everything, take up your cross, and follow me"... but how difficult this precept is to fulfil! Who will deliver us from this body of death! O Saint Expedit, with all the strength of my soul, I beg you to ask the Lord for the necessary graces so that I may attach myself only to him, my one and only good, for "in him I die, with him also I shall live".
O Christ, protect us tomorrow and always, but on everything today.
O Mary, Queen of Martyrs, pray for us.
Saint Expedit, who lost everything to win Jesus Christ, pray for us.
Three, Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory to the Father.
Day 7: Faith
O Saint Expedit, whose faith did not waver in the face of the executioner, may our faith never waver under the light burden of small daily trials. "He who is not with me is against me," said the Lord. O Saint Expedit, pray that neither doubt nor affliction may be an accomplice to my weaknesses and natural cowardice! Come to my aid in these moments of trouble and confusion, so that my heart, animated by a more ardent faith, may see peace and security reborn in it. I want to be Christ's, I want to fight for his kingdom to come, I want, like you, Saint Expedit, to be his legionary for the conquest of souls, after having conquered mine, still rebellious! "The God of armies is with us", so I must not be afraid "even if the earth is shaken and the mountains fall into the sea". Pray, Saint Expedit, that the Lord may grant me your invincible faith, so that on the supreme day I may be worthy of hearing his adorable mouth repeat for me this sentence of eternal happiness: "Your sins are forgiven you. Go in peace. Your faith has saved you.
May the Blessed Virgin, who unreservedly believed the word of the angel, protect and guard us. Amen.

O Mary, Queen of confessors, pray for us.
Saint Expedit, invincible athlete of faith, pray for us.

Day 8: Hope
"Wait a little, my soul, wait for the divine promise, and you will possess in heaven all goods in abundance. With this assurance, O Saint Expedit, you did not hesitate to despise all the joys of this short existence, reminding us, by your generous sacrifice, that "the grace of the Lord is better than life".
Obtain for us, O St. Expedit, this precious virtue which will keep our eyes fixed on him from whom we must expect everything, for, says St. Augustine: "Nothing is so opposed to hope as to look backwards", and too often my attachment to the creatures of this world prevents my impulses towards God. We are moored to the port of hope," says St Gregory, "by past blessings, as by enormous cables"; alas, how much more enormous are those that pull me to this earth! Help me, St. Expedit, to break all these ties and free my spirit, so that I can say: "I have sought rest everywhere, and it is in the Lord's inheritance that I will dwell.

Day 9: Charity
O Saint Expedit, if faith and hope earned you the glorious crown of martyrdom, it was your intense charity that alone sanctified your loving sacrifice. "He who does much, loves much". Without charity, my works are worthless in the eyes of the Lord, for everything here must be done out of love for him, and it is only because of it that my actions are worthy of any merit. What good can I do by myself, who am nothing? Nothing but nothingness!
O Saint Expedit, obtain for me that this charity may grow unceasingly, stronger and more lively, for in the other life, although faith and hope will necessarily cease, eternally fixed, charity, as Saint Paul affirms, "will never cease.
O holy Expedit, help me to purify my affections of all that is not God, so that divine charity may be infused more and more "in this soul that thirsts for its God, in this flesh that languishes after him like a dry land, parched without water", and that the Blessed Virgin, model of the purest love, may lead us to Jesus and help us to love him. AMEN.
O Christ, protect us tomorrow and always, but especially today.
O Mary, Mother of divine love, pray for us.
Saint Expedit, who received from the Lord the crown of justice which he promised to those who love him, pray for us.
Three, Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory be to the Father.
