Written on Maundy Thursday 2006, this prayer was on the work table of a priest who had been taken ill.
Dear Lord
we give you thanks for the priests
throughout the world
and especially for those
that you put in our path.
Indwell them with your presence
so that our encounters with them
may be encounters with you.
Renew in them every day the "Yes"
they have said to you
and make their fidelity a light for the world.
God of tenderness and love
take pity on those who feel wounded or discouraged.
Comfort elderly priests
and those who are dying.
Lord, place in our hearts
towards priests
respect, gratitude and understanding.
Make us recognise in them
men of the Eucharist in which we live
and those through whom your mercy
your mercy and forgiveness.
Help us to be
wherever we are,
your humble and discreet servants,
working with them
according to our means, for the coming of your Kingdom.
Lord Jesus,
you know how much we need
priests to make our way to the Father.
We beg you
raise up in your Church
many shepherds according to your heart
