Psaumes
Le mot grec psalmos (du verbe psalléin) exprime l’action de toucher une corde pour la faire vibrer ; il évoque d’abord le jeu d’un instrument à cordes, puis l’air joué, enfin le texte chanté avec accompagnement instrumental. David apparaît dans l’Écriture comme un bon joueur de cithare (1 S 16, 16-23), capable de composer de véritables poésies (2 S 1, 17-27), apte donc à devenir l’initiateur de ces poèmes religieux chantés et accompagnés que sont les Psaumes (cf. 1 Ch 16, 4-36).
Le livre des cent-cinquante Psaumes lui est attribué, bien que la moitié d’entre eux seulement portent son nom dans leur titre ; en fait, il s’agit plus d’un hommage à un artiste religieux génial que d’un label d’authenticité. Pourquoi ces cent-cinquante Psaumes, composés en Israël entre le Xe et le Ve siècle avant notre ère, restent-ils les prières et les « louanges » par excellence ? C’est que tout l’humain vibre en ces chants qui lancent vers Dieu l’adoration, la complaisance et la paix, mais aussi la haine qu’ils exorcisent, l’angoisse et la peur, l’accablement et l’espoir, le désir et l’attente dans la confiance retrouvée.
Tous les psalmistes ne répètent-ils pas sur tous les tons la recommandation de l’un d’entre eux : « Décharge sur Yahvé ton fardeau et lui te subviendra ; il ne peut laisser à jamais chanceler le juste » (Ps 54, 23) ? Rien de ce qui est humain n’est étranger à Dieu ; l’Homme-Dieu, Jésus, a repris pour son compte et pour le nôtre tous ces accents sortis d’un cœur brisé (Ps 50, 19), et l’Église, à sa suite, ne cesse de les faire siens.
La psalmodie, ou chant des Psaumes, constitue la substance même de la liturgie des Heures qui, toutes les quatre semaines, chante à nouveau le Psautier dans sa quasi intégralité (les ordres contemplatifs le reprennent dans l’espace d’une seule ou de deux semaines). Les chants de la messe sont empruntés aux Psaumes dans leur très grande majorité (voir Graduel) ; entre les deux premières lectures, un Psaume est prévu (entre la première lecture et l’évangile, en semaine).
La célébration des sacrements et des sacramentaux fait presque toujours intervenir un Psaume ou quelques versets psalmiques, tant il est vrai que l’Église a besoin de ces chants qui la font marcher vers la rencontre avec Dieu et qui lui donnent cœur dans la lutte contre les forces du mal.
