History of the Most Holy Rosary

In thanksgiving for the decisive victory of the Christian fleet over the Turkish fleet at Lepanto on the first Sunday of October 1571, the holy Pope Pius V instituted an annual feast under the title of Saint Mary of Victory; but shortly afterwards Pope Gregory XII changed the name of this feast to Our Lady of the Rosary.

The Rosary had been instituted by Saint Dominic at the beginning of the 13th century. Through the zeal of the Popes, and also through the abundant fruits it produced in the Church, it became more and more popular. In the 15th century, Blessed Alain de La Roche, a Dominican, was inspired by Mary to revive this excellent devotion.

Later, in the first years of the eighteenth century, there appeared an extraordinary man who was rightly called the Dominic of modern times, and who was the great propagator and apostle of devotion to the Holy Rosary; he was Saint Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort. Since Saint Dominic, there has been no man more zealous than this great missionary for the establishment of the Confraternity of the Rosary: he set it up in all places where it was not already in place; it was the means he judged most powerful for establishing the reign of God in souls. He himself composed a method of reciting the Rosary, which has remained the best of all, the easiest to remember, the most instructive and the most pious. The Apostle of the West recited his entire Rosary every day according to his method, and had it recited publicly every day in his missions, and he made it a rule for his followers to follow his example.

By his daily Rosary Montfort converted the greatest sinners and made them persevere in the grace and fervour of their conversion; he could say, "No one resisted me once I was able to get hold of him with my Rosary!" He had a thousand industries to propagate and make people love the Rosary: there were fifteen banners representing the fifteen mysteries of the Rosary; elsewhere, huge Rosaries that were recited while walking, in churches or around churches, in the manner of the Way of the Cross. He exalted the Rosary in his hymns; a thunder of voices answered his, and all the echoes repeated, from hill to hill, the glories of this blessed devotion.
His work continued after him; it was with the Rosary in his hand that the Vendée, in 1793, defended its homes and its altars; it is also with the Rosary or the rosary in his hand that the Christian populations appear in all religious ceremonies.

Abbé L. Jaud, Vie des Saints pour tous les jours de l'année, Tours, Mame, 1950.

Invocations

"Hail Mary, full of grace,
The Lord is with you.
Blessed art thou among women
And Jesus, the fruit of your womb, is blessed.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
Pray for us sinners,
Now and at the hour of our death."

After each decade, say the following invocation:

O my Jesus, forgive us all our sins, preserve us from the fire of hell and lead all souls to Heaven. We pray to you especially for those who are most in need of your mercy.

At the end of the rosary, say the following invocations:

Lord, give us priests!
Lord, give us holy priests!
Lord, give us many holy priests!
Lord, give us many holy religious vocations!

Chaplet

According to the Larousse, the rosary is an object of devotion consisting of a sort of necklace of threaded grains, which one passes successively through one's fingers, reciting certain prayers, in particular, among Catholics, the Creed, the Pater and the Hail Mary.

The rosary is used in various religious traditions (under different names). It is used to count prayers recited repeatedly while shelling grains.

Novena

A novena is a prayer that is done in 9 successive days. Through this type of prayer, one asks through the intercession of a saint, an angel, the Virgin Mary or directly to God himself, a favour.
