Revealed by OUR LORD to Saint Bridget in the Church of Saint Paul in Rome.

Through this exercise, performed daily, as many prayers with Pater and Ave are recited in one year as OUR LORD received blows in his Sorrowful Passion.  JESUS accompanied this revelation with the most MAGNIFICENT PROMISES in favour of those who would perform this holy practice with faith and piety. (See at the bottom of this page)

FIRST PRAYER

PATER, AVE

Eternal sweetness to all those who love you, joy which surpasses all joy and desire, salvation and hope of every sinner, who testified that you had no greater contentment than to be among men, until you took on human nature at the end of time for the sake of them, remember all the sufferings you endured from the moment of your conception, and especially in the time of your Holy Passion, as was decreed and ordered from all eternity in the divine mind.

Remember, Lord, that at the Last Supper with your disciples, after washing their feet, you gave them your sacred body and your precious blood, and while consoling them with gentleness, you foretold them your coming Passion.

Remember the sadness and bitterness which you felt in your soul, as you yourself testified, saying: "My soul is saddened to the point of death. "

Remember all the fear, anguish and pain you endured in your delicate body before the torture of the cross, when, after praying three times, shedding a sweat of Blood, you were betrayed by Judas, your disciple, taken by the nation you had chosen and raised up, accused by false witnesses, unjustly judged by three judges, in the flower of your youth and in the solemn time of the Passover.

Remember that you were stripped of your own garments and clothed with mockery; that your eyes and face were covered, that you were slapped, that you were crowned with thorns, that a reed was put in your hand, and that you were tied to a pillar and torn with blows and insults.

In memory of all these pains and sorrows, which you endured before your Passion on the cross, give me before my death true contrition, pure and full confession, worthy satisfaction and the remission of all my sins.  So be it.

***************

SECOND PRAYER

PATER, AVE

O Jesus! true freedom of the Angels.  Paradise of delights, remember the horror and sadness you endured when your enemies, like furious lions, surrounded you, and with a thousand insults, blows, scratches and other unheard-of torments tormented you to death.  In consideration of these torments, I beseech you, O my Saviour, to deliver me from all my visible and invisible enemies and to bring me under your protection to the perfection of eternal salvation.  So be it.

***************

THIRD PRAYER

PATER, AVE

O Jesus!  Creator of heaven and earth, whom nothing can limit or restrict.  You who contain and hold all things in your power, remember the bitter pain you suffered when the Jews tied your sacred hands and delicate feet to the cross and pierced them with large, blunt nails, And not finding you in the condition they wanted, to satisfy their rage they enlarged your wounds, added pain upon pain, and with unheard-of cruelty laid you on the cross and pulled you about, dislocating your limbs.

I beseech you, O Jesus, by the memory of this most holy and most loving pain of the cross, to give me your fear and your love!  So be it.

***************

FOURTH PRAYER

PATER, AVE

O Jesus!  Heavenly Physician, lifted up on the cross to heal our wounds with your own, remember the pain and bruising you suffered in all your limbs, none of which remained in its place, so that there was no pain like yours.  From the soles of your feet to the crown of your head, no part of your body was free from torment; and yet, forgetting all your sufferings, you did not cease to pray to your Father for your enemies, saying to him, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.

Through this great mercy, and in memory of this pain, may the memory of your most bitter passion bring about in us perfect contrition and the remission of all our sins.  So be it.

***************

FIFTH PRAYER

PATER, AVE

O Jesus, mirror of eternal splendour, remember how sad you were when, contemplating in the light of your Divinity the predestination of those who were to be saved by the merits of your Holy Passion, you saw at the same time the great multitude of reprobates who were to be damned by their sins, and you bitterly pitied those unfortunate sinners who were lost and desperate.

By this abyss of compassion and pity, and especially by the kindness you showed to the good thief, saying to him: "You will be with me today in Paradise.  "I beg you, sweet Jesus, that at the hour of my death you will have mercy on me.  So be it.

***************

SIXTH PRAYER

PATER, AVE

O Jesus!  Loving and all-wanted King, remember the pain you felt when, naked and like a wretch, you were lifted up and bound to the cross, where all your relatives and friends abandoned you except your beloved Mother, who remained very faithfully by your side in your agony, and whom you commended to your faithful disciple, saying to Mary, "Woman, here is your Son! "and to Saint John: "Here is your Mother! ".

I beseech you, O my Saviour, by the sword of sorrow which then pierced the soul of your holy Mother, to have compassion on me in all my afflictions and tribulations, both bodily and spiritual, and to assist me in all my trials, especially at the hour of death.  So be it.

***************

SEVENTH PRAYER

PATER, AVE

O Jesus!  Fountain of inexhaustible pity, who with deep affection for love said on the Cross: "I thirst," but for the salvation of the human race.  I beg you, my Saviour, to warm the desire of our hearts to strive for perfection in all our works, and to extinguish entirely in us carnal concupiscence and the ardour of worldly appetites.  So be it.

***************

EIGHTH PRAYER

PATER, AVE

Jesus, sweetness of heart, sweetness of spirit, through the bitterness of the gall and vinegar which you tasted on the Cross for our sake, grant that we may worthily receive your precious body and blood during our life and at the hour of our death, as a remedy and consolation for our souls.  So be it.

***************

NINTH PRAYER

PATER, AVE

O Jesus!  Royal virtue, joy of the spirit, remember the pain you endured when, in bitterness at the approach of death, insulted and reviled by the Jews, you cried out loudly that you had been abandoned by your Father, saying: "My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? ".

In this anguish, I beseech you, O my Saviour, do not abandon me in the terrors and pains of my death.  So be it.

***************

TENTH PRAYER

PATER, AVE

O Jesus, who is in all things beginning and end, life and virtue, remember that you plunged yourself for us into an abyss of pain from the soles of our feet to the crown of our heads.  In view of the greatness of your wounds, teach me to keep your commandments with true charity, whose way is broad and easy for those who love you.  So be it.

***************

ELEVENTH PRAYER

PATER, AVE

O Jesus, deepest abyss of mercy, I beg you, in memory of your wounds which have gone to the marrow of your bones and entrails, to draw me, a wretched man, overwhelmed by my offences, out of sin, and to hide me from your angry face in the holes of your wounds, until your anger and your just indignation have passed.  So be it.

***************

TWELFTH PRAYER

PATER, AVE

O Jesus, mirror of truth, mark of unity, bond of charity, remember the multitude of wounds with which you were wounded from head to foot, torn and reddened by the shedding of your adorable blood.  O great and universal pain which you suffered for the love of us in your virginal flesh! Most sweet Jesus, what could you have done for us that you didn`t do!... I beseech you, O my Saviour, to mark with your precious Blood all your wounds in my heart, so that I may read your pain and your love unceasingly there.

May the faithful memory of your Passion renew the fruit of your sufferings in my soul, and may your love increase in it every day, until I come to You who are the treasure of all good things and all joys, which I beg you to give me, O sweetest Jesus, in eternal life.  So be it.

***************

THIRTEENTH PRAYER

PATER, AVE

O Jesus!  Strongest Lion, immortal and invincible King, remember the pain you endured when all your strength, both of heart and body, was completely exhausted, and you bowed your head and said, "All is consumed.

Through this anguish and pain, I beg you, Lord Jesus, to have mercy on me in the last hour of my life, when my soul will be in anguish and my mind will be troubled.  So be it.

***************

FOURTEENTH PRAYER

PATER, AVE

O Jesus, the only Son of the Father, the splendour and figure of his substance, remember the humble and humble recommendation you made to your Father, saying: "Father, into your hands I commend my Spirit", and your body torn and your heart broken, and the bowels of your mercy opened to redeem us, you expired. ------ By this precious death, I beg you, O King of saints!  Strengthen me and help me to resist the devil with flesh and blood, so that being dead to the world, I may live in you alone.

Receive, I pray you, at the hour of my death, my pilgrim and exiled soul that returns to you.  So be it.

***************

FIFTEENTH PRAYER

PATER, AVE

O Jesus, true and fruitful vine.  Remember the abundant outpouring of blood which you so generously shed from your sacred body, like the grapes under the press.

From your side, pierced by a soldier with a spear, you gave blood and water so that not a single drop remained, and finally, like a bundle of myrrh raised to the top of the Cross, your delicate flesh was destroyed, the humour of your bowels dried up, the marrow of your bones withered.

By this bitter passion and by the shedding of your precious blood, I beg you, O sweet Jesus, wound my heart, so that my tears of penitence and love, night and day, may serve as my bread; convert me entirely to you, that my heart may be a perpetual dwelling place for you, that my conversation may be pleasing to you, and that the end of my life may be so praiseworthy that I may merit your Paradise, to praise you and bless you forever with all your saints  So be it.

-----PROMISES-----

Beautiful promises were made to St. Bridget by an image of Our Lord Jesus Christ crucified, on the condition that she would say these Prayers every day, and they are also promised to all those who will say them devoutly every day for a year.

As it was a long time ago that Brigitte wished to know the number of blows that Our Lord received in his passion, one day He appeared to her and said: "I received in my body 5,480 blows, if you want to honour them by some veneration, you will say 15 Pater and 15 Ave with the following Oraisons (which He taught her for a whole year).  During the year you will have saluted each of my wounds.

He then added that whoever says these Prayers for one year:

1 - Will deliver 15 souls of his lineage from Purgatory.

2 - 15 righteous of his lineage will be confirmed and preserved in grace.

3 -And 15 sinners of the same lineage will be converted.

4 -The person who says them will have the first degrees of perfection.

5 -And fifteen days before his death I will give him my precious body, that by it he may be delivered from eternal hunger; and I will give him my precious blood to drink, lest he be thirsty forever.

6 -And a fortnight before his death he shall have bitter contrition for all his sins, and a perfect knowledge of them.

7. I will set the sign of my most victorious Cross before him for his help and defence against the snares of his enemies.

8. Before his death, I will come with my dearest and most beloved Mother.

9 -And I will receive his soul with blessing, and lead it to eternal joys.

10-And having brought her to that point, I will give her a singular drink from the fountain of my Deity, which I will not do to others who have not said my Omonitions.

11-It is necessary to know that whoever has lived for thirty years in mortal sin, and has said devoutly or has proposed to say his Prayers, the Lord will forgive him all his sins.

12-And will defend him from evil temptations.

13-And will preserve and keep his five senses.

14-And preserve him from sudden death.

15-He will deliver his soul from eternal punishment.

16-And he will obtain all that he asks of God and of the Blessed Virgin.

17-That if he had always lived according to his own will and had to die tomorrow, his life will be prolonged.

18-All the times that someone says his Prayers, he will gain 100 days of indulgences.

19-And he will be assured of being joined to the Supreme Chorus of Angels.

20-Whoever teaches them to another, his joy and merit will never fail - but will be stable and last forever.

21-Wherever these Omonitions are and will be spoken, God is present with His grace.

All these privileges were promised to St. Bridget by an image of Our Lord Jesus Christ crucified, on the condition that she would say these Oviations every day, and they are also promised to all those who will say them devoutly every day for the space of one year.

-----APPROVALS-----

These prayers and the promises attached to them were copied from a book printed in Toulouse in 1740, and published by Father Adrien Parvilliers of the Society of Jesus, Apostolic Missionary to the Holy Land, with approval, permission and recommendation to spread them.

At the time of St. Brigid in the 14th century, printing had not yet been invented; copyists were used.  Pope Urban VI encouraged them to multiply the copies of the revelations of Saint Bridget, which were fought over by kings, sovereigns, bishops, universities, convents and libraries.

The books containing these Oraisons and Promises were approved by a great number of Prelates, among them His Eminence Cardinal Giraud of Cambrai in 1845, and Monsieur Florian, Archbishop of Toulouse in 1863.  The collection of small books, among which were these Oraisons, was blessed by His Holiness Pope Pius IX on 31 May 1862.  Finally, this collection was recommended by the Great Congress of Malines on 22 August 1863.  Those who visit the Basilica of St. Paul in Rome can see the life-size crucifix, sculpted by Peter Cavallini, before which St. Brigid was kneeling, and the following inscription placed in the Basilica: < Pendentis pendente Dei verba accepit aure accipit at verbum corde Brigitta Deum.  Anna jubilei MCCCL >, which recalls the miracle by which the crucifix spoke with Brigitte.

SAINT BRIGITTE, WIDOW

St. Brigid or Brigid, daughter of Birgier, a royal prince of Sweden, was born around 1302.  Her parents lived in the practice of holy piety.  But having lost her virtuous mother shortly after her birth, the young Brigit was brought up by one of her aunts, who was also commendable for her virtues.  She was deprived of speech until she was three years old, and she did not know how to speak until she used her tongue to praise God.

From her childhood, she took pleasure only in serious speech.  Her grace worked so powerfully in her heart that she had no other attraction than for the exercises of piety.  When she was ten years old, she was particularly touched by a sermon she heard on the passion of the Saviour.  The next night she thought she saw Jesus Christ tied to the cross, covered with wounds and blood.  At the same time, it seemed to her that a voice was saying to her: "Look at me, my daughter.  < Who is treating you so cruelly? > she said.  < It is those who despise me and are insensitive to my love for them.

The impression made on her by this mysterious dream never faded, and from that time on, the sufferings of Jesus Christ became the continual subject of her meditations and made her tears flow unceasingly.  She married, at the age of 16, by obedience, a young man of great piety, named Ulphon, of whom she had eight children.  Brigid's example, even more than her instructions, sanctified her large family.  Her revelations and other heavenly favours only made her more humble and fervent.  She died in Rome in 1373, after returning from a pilgrimage to the Holy Land.  She founded the Order of the Brigittines.
