Saint Odilon of Mercoeur (961-1049), fifth abbot of Cluny, was the promoter of the "Peace of God" and of the feast of the dead on 2 November.

I bow my knees to Him in whose Name every knee bends in heaven, on earth and in hell, and I confess my fault to the Father of lights, to whom belong all spirits, He who commands on earth as in heaven. I banish you, enemy of mankind, you who prowl about seeking whom to devour, turn away your artifices and your occult traps, for the Cross of the Lord is with me, and I adore Him without ceasing. O Cross my refuge, O Cross my way and my strength, O Cross impregnable standard, O Cross invincible weapon.

The Cross repels all evil, the Cross puts darkness to flight; by this Cross I shall walk the way to God. The Cross is my life: but for you, enemy, it is your death. May the Cross of our Lord be my nobility, may his Blood remain in me the true redemption. May his Resurrection give me a firm faith and a sure hope in the resurrection of the just. And may his glorious Ascension into heaven make me walk daily towards the object of my heavenly desire; may it pour the Holy Spirit into our hearts and remit all our past sins. Amen.

(Bibliotheca Cluniacensis, col. 371-372)
