The following is a prayer on the patience and mercy of God, entitled "My God, what have You done for me?" by Blessed Cardinal John Henry Newman (1801-1890), an Anglican priest who converted to Catholicism in 1845, was elevated to the rank of Cardinal in 1879 by Pope Leo XIII and beatified on 19 September 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI

Prayer

My God, what have You done for me? Men say of You, O my only Good, that Your judgments are severe and Your punishments extreme. All I can say is that it has not been so for me. Let others speak for them, and You will confound them and bring them down in their own confusion on the Day of Judgment. I have nothing to do with them, it is You who will judge them, but for me, my only experience is that of Your conduct towards me: here, I testify to what I know absolutely and what I feel in the depths of my being, that You have had only patience and mercy for me.

Oh, how You forget that I ever rebelled against You! You always grant me your help again. I fall, and yet You do not reject me. In spite of all my sins, You still love me, You protect me, You comfort me, You surround me with benefits, You sustain me and You lead me. I vex Your grace, yet You increase it. I offend You, and You are not angry, but You are as good as if I had nothing to forgive, nothing to repent of, nothing to make amends for, as if I were Your best, most faithful, firmest and most loyal friend. Alas, I am even led to presume on your love, so much so that it resembles the weakness of indulgence, although my duty is to fear You! I confess, O my true Saviour, that every day is but a new memorial of your untiring love, which nothing can overcome! Amen.

Mercy

Mercy comes from the Latin misereri which means to have mercy and cor (heart).

Mercy is the deep attitude of the being characterised by the loving disposition to forgive. Sensitivity to the misery and suffering of others and a fundamental benevolence towards one's neighbour. This is one of the attributes of God that explains his entire plan for the salvation of humanity.

God's goodness is infinite because it is one aspect of his mercy (Ps 86:5).

to God

To God, the being above all, nothing is impossible. Everything is possible with him. Whatever difficulties you find yourself in, trust in him, have faith. Pray to him and he will answer you.

Prayers addressed directly to God do not go through any intermediary. He receives them as they are. Some people prefer this type of prayer where they speak, in their hearts, directly to God.

God is present everywhere. Within us and without us. Even when we think we are alone, he is there. He sees us, he listens to us. He knows us better than we know ourselves.

Like a good father with his children, he is compassionate, merciful and always ready to forgive us our failings and sins.

Let us entrust ourselves to him, ask him for the grace to be a reflection of his love for mankind. Let us entrust ourselves to him and be attentive to the different signs and messages that he sends us every day, within us or outside us through our fellow human beings.
