Origin
The Rosary of the Dead was composed by Monsignor Plantier, Bishop of Nîmes, in favour of the Souls of Purgatory. It was approved and blessed by Blessed Pius IX in 1873. The Rosary of the Dead of the Archconfraternity of Our Lady of Suffrage is composed of four tens, that is to say forty grains, in memory of the forty hours that preceded the Resurrection and as a reminder of the four last ends of the Gospels.
How to meditate the Rosary of the Dead
The Rosary has a cross or medal of the Archconfraternity. Between the cross and the heart is a large bead. Then, to separate the tens, three other grosgrains. The Rosary has four tens, one can say it on a traditional rosary, however, it is possible to obtain it from the Archconfraternity of Our Lady of Suffrage. A short meditation is proposed before each ten.
Ways to recite the Rosary
Start by making the Sign of the Cross.
Begin with the Psalm De Profundis, on the first large grain, the one between the Cross and the Heart.
De Profundis
From the depths of the abyss I cry to You, Lord, hear my prayer. Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplication. If you heed our iniquities, Lord, Lord, who can stand before You? But Thou art full of mercy, and I hope in Thee, O Lord, for Thy Law. My soul has relied on Your Word, my soul has put all its trust in the Lord. From morning till evening Israel hopes in the Lord; for in the Lord is mercy and abundant redemption. It is He who will redeem Israel from all her iniquities.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.
O Lord, hear my prayer, and let my cry come to You!
Over the little grains
Sweet Heart of Mary, consolation of those who suffer, pray for us and for the abandoned souls in Purgatory.
On the big grains
Give their Lord eternal rest, and let eternal light shine upon them.
The Rosary ends with the De Profundis, followed by the next invocation: "Give their Lord eternal rest, and let perpetual light shine upon them.
For every ten, a short meditation is proposed. These meditations, texts taken from the New Testament, are presented in two groups: 'The Death and Resurrection of Jesus' and 'Our Passage into God'.

Losing a loved one is often a daunting ordeal.
If we consider death as the end of biological life, it is also a passage to the fullness of real life. Praying for a deceased person is asking that he or she may experience this passage of heavenly joy. Remember these words from Sacred Scripture: "It is a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be delivered from their sins" (2M 12:46).
