Saint Benedict is often represented with a chalice from which a snake comes out, to remind us that this Saint escaped death by making a sign of the Cross on a cup full of poison that his monks offered him to drink. This poison of death could not bear the sign of life which is the Cross, says Saint Gregory, and the glass cup shattered as if a stone had been thrown at it. " The letters inscribed on and around the cross allude to this miracle.
Cross of our Father Saint Benedict. May the Holy Cross be my Light! May the demon not be my leader. Depart, Satan! Do not convince me of your vanities. What you are offering is bad. Drink your venom yourself!
Crux Sancti Patri Benedicti. Crux Sancta Sit Mihi Lux ! Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux. Vade Retro, Satana ! Non Suade Mihi Vana. Sunt Mala Qua’ Libas. Ipse Venena Bibas !
