Marie-Françoise Thérèse Martin, in religion Sister Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face, also known as Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus or little Thérèse, is a French Carmelite nun born in Alençon on January 2, 1873 and died in Lisieux on September 30, 1897.

Thérèse Martin was the fifth and last daughter of a Christian family where she grew up surrounded by love. She was 4 years old when the death of her mother brought a break in her life. The father and the quintet of his daughters moved to Lisieux to be closer to part of his family.
The second drama that shook Thérèse as a child: her sister Pauline and then her sister Marie, whom she had chosen successively as her 'little mother', entered Carmel.

On Christmas night, by a powerful grace, she regains the joyful balance of her childhood and sets off, in a "giant's race", towards the God-Love who has taken her.

Not without a step, intrepidly going as far as Rome to throw herself at the Pope's feet, she obtained entry to Carmel at the age of fifteen, on April 9, 1888.

With heroic fidelity, she continued her journey towards holiness there. Little by little the Lord discovered her 'little way' of abandonment and daring trust. On June 9, 1895, she offered herself to the merciful love of God.

During her long illness, tuberculosis, she conformed herself to Christ in the mystery of her agony for the salvation of sinners who have no faith. She died at the age of 24, promising to rain 'a shower of roses' on the earth and to spend her heaven doing good on earth.
A few years later, the story of her life, written in obedience, met with an overwhelming popular success, and the testimonies of graces obtained through her intercession poured into the monastery, so numerous that the Pope spoke of a "hurricane of glory.

She was proclaimed Patroness of the Missions of the Universal Church and Doctor of the Church in 1997.

This novena will be an opportunity to discover the "little way" of childhood and of trust to inevitably open the sluices of the heart of our merciful God.

Daily Prayers

In the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

 I believe in God

Prayer to the Holy Spirit

O Holy Spirit, may your immense love awaken all hearts bruised by pain!

O Holy Spirit, by your will, may the hungry all over the world find their way back to their food and may they finally be filled with the true life which is the one you promise us all.

O Holy Spirit, by your grace, may the leaders of the world be a little lenient towards their people so that finally the hatred and disputes between people may disappear.
It is with you that we will come to God the Father Almighty!

O Holy Spirit, through this short prayer may you think of all those who hope in you,
Help everyone to be able to accept your will, and give everyone the strength to be able to validate your will! Amen

Prayer to God to ask for a grace through the intercession of Saint Theresa

Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I thank you for all the favours and graces with which you have enriched your servant Saint Therese of the Child Jesus during the twenty-four years she has spent on this earth.

By the merits of this Saint, grant me the grace I ardently desire : .........................................................................................................................................................., if it is in conformity with your Holy Will and for the good of my soul.

Help my faith and my hope, O holy Teresa! Fulfill, once again, your promise to spend your heaven doing good on earth, by allowing me to receive a rose as a sign of the grace I desire to obtain. Amen.

Offering of the day composed by St. Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face

My God, I offer you all the actions that I am going to do today, for the intentions and for the glory of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I want to sanctify the beating of my heart, my thoughts and my simplest works by uniting them to His infinite merits, and to make reparation for my faults by throwing them into the furnace of His merciful love.

O my God! I ask you for me and for those dear to me the grace to fulfill perfectly your holy will, to accept for your love the joys and sorrows of this passing life so that one day we may be reunited in Heaven for all eternity. Amen.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father!

First day of the novena - Saint Teresa, child so trusting in God

"One can never have too much confidence in the Good God, so powerful and merciful... I assure you that the Good Lord is much better than you think. He's satisfied with a look, a loving sigh... "

Saint "little Therese", remember your promise to do good on earth, pour out abundantly your shower of roses on those who invoke you, and obtain for us from God the graces we expect from his infinite goodness.

O God, you have set the soul of Saint Therese of the Child Jesus ablaze with your Spirit of Love, grant that we too may love you and make you love us very much.

Most Holy Trinity, here I am in your presence, assisted by Saint Therese of the Child Jesus, through whom you have revealed to the Church a "little way" of spiritual growth and holiness, accessible to all.

Beloved Father, in the name of Jesus, I ask you urgently for the grace to enter into this little way, and to grow in it unceasingly. Relying on the promise of Your only begotten Son. I know that You will hear your child, for "whatever you ask my Father in my name, He will give it to you". (Jn 16:23)

I am aware that this grace will require of me a true conversion of heart and mind. It will be necessary that from now on I truly behave like your child, that I become very small before you, in the total abandonment and trust of the little child in the arms of his father and mother. It will be necessary that with every person, in all things, the primacy of love reign in me, as the Apostle defined it (1 Cor 13), which also means that from now on I must do "the ordinary things of life extraordinarily well". All this is made possible by the virtue of humility, so difficult to acquire.

Daily Prayers

Deuxième jour de la neuvaine - Sainte Thérèse, étoile du pontificat du pape Pie XI

"My life is but a moment, a fleeting hour. My life is but one day that eludes me and runs away. You know that, oh my God! To love you on earth I have nothing but today! Oh! I love you, Jesus! Towards you my soul yearns. For one day only remains my sweet support. Come reign in my heart.

Yes I feel it, even if I would have on my conscience all the sins that can be committed, I would go, with a broken heart of repentance, to throw myself into the arms of Jesus, because I know how much He cherishes the prodigal son who returns to Him... »

Saint Teresa, intercede for me before the Lord so that without delay I may make real progress in the little way that Jesus has revealed to you. Assist me in this battle where I must overcome the forces of evil within me.

Most Holy Trinity, one God, you whom the Apostle John dared to define in three immortal words: "GOD IS LOVE", transform me in such a way that together with Saint Therese I too can say, "my vocation is Love!".

Beloved Father, you created me out of love and for love, grant me the grace of this demanding vocation. By myself I am incapable of living love as the Apostle describes it; but with your grace everything is possible. From now on I want to be patient and helpful, humble, indulgent and open to all, without seeking my own interests, without becoming irritated or taking evil into account, putting all my joy in the truth.

Blessed Virgin Mary, my beloved Mother, imprint in me your spirit of love so that I may become, in your image, a transparency of the Good News of your divine Son.

May I be gradually transfigured, on the path of spiritual childhood, on which I have embarked without return. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Daily Prayers

Third day of the novena - Saint Teresa, humble, poor and small

"In the evening of Love, speaking without a parable, Jesus said: "If anyone wants to love me all his life, let him keep my Word. My Father and I will come and visit him. And from his heart making our home, coming to him, we will always love him! Filled with peace, we want him to dwell in our Love!

How, when we throw our faults with filial trust into the devouring inferno of Love, how can they not be consumed without return? »

Saint Teresa, intercede for me, so that I may obtain the graces I ask for. Above all, obtain for me the grace of living in love for God and those around me.

Lord, you who "give your grace to the humble" (Jas 4:6) and who "listen to their desires" (Ps 10:17), grant me, I beg you, the grace to clothe myself in humility in my relations with my neighbour from now on (1Pet 5:5).

I have embarked on the path of spiritual childhood that you revealed to Saint Therese of Lisieux. Now, she says, in order to walk in "the little way" it is necessary to be "humble and poor in spirit"; she herself is a model of this.

It is in order to be like Jesus, your divine Son, our Saviour "meek and humble of heart", that I beg you, beloved Father, to grant me the grace of humility. I know that I am embarking on an arduous path, but here, as elsewhere, only the first steps cost. May my guardian angel and St. Therese support me especially in these first steps. This is how I will finally be pleasing in your eyes, beloved Father, for then I will truly be your little child, and from this life I will be able to taste the fullness of the peace and joy of Christ Jesus, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. Amen.

Daily Prayers

Fourth day of the novena - Saint Teresa, weak for God

"I cannot fear a God who has made himself so small for me... I love him!... for He is nothing but love and mercy!...

May Jesus always give me to understand that He alone is perfect happiness, even when He Himself seems to be absent!... Christ is my love, he is my whole life. »

Saint Theresa, pray for every person, every family, every country... For the whole world is sorely lacking in love. May God's love reign in every heart.

Most Holy Father, eternal and almighty God, your Son Jesus took our flesh to redeem us from sin. Along with our Savior, he is our model.

Beloved Father, in Jesus, I am "your child, poor, destitute and perpetually dependent," as Therese reminds me. Like her, I want to "remain a little child expecting everything from You as a little child expects everything from his father". Like her, "I am a tiny little soul whom the Good Lord has filled with graces.

Now give me the strength I need to make these graces bear fruit at last, and "the awareness of my smallness, of my powerlessness to do everything well".

When I am small again, in humility before you, I will be able to say with Therese: "It is so sweet to feel weak and small. Then I will be able to put on your strength, for when I am weak, then I am strong". (2 Cor. 12:10)

Daily Prayers

Fifth day of the novena - Saint Teresa, abandoned to God

"My way is all trust and love, I don't understand the souls who are afraid of such a tender friend...
The only happiness on earth is to apply oneself to always find delicious the part that Jesus gives us...
I suffer only for a moment. It is because we think about the past and the future that we get discouraged and despair. »

Saint Teresa, obtain for us the graces to understand how everything rests in God, our life, our past, present and future. All material and especially spiritual goods. May we know how to consecrate our lives to God and trust him in everything and for everything.

With St. John of the Cross, Therese repeated: "We obtain from God as much as we hope for"; having reached the heart of the novena, I beg you, beloved Father, after having already asked for great graces, to grant me the grace of total trust to obtain them. For this I surrender myself entirely to You, eternal and almighty God.

Therese insistently invites me to surrender and trust in You Lord, God of goodness and mercy. "The Good God wants me to surrender myself as a little child who does not worry about what will be done with him, because He always measures His gifts by our trust," she says.

In order to enter fully into the "little way of trust and love," which will bring my will into perfect conformity with yours, Lord, I need the priceless gift of the child's abandonment which rests on his mother's heart, and total trust in you, beloved and almighty Father.

Grant me these gifts today and keep them with me throughout my life here on earth. Thanks to these gifts very present in my spirit, I will sanctify, one day after another, all those you will give me to live, in spite of my weaknesses and the fragility of my nature. Through Jesus Christ our Lord who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Daily Prayers

Sixth day of the novena - Saint Teresa, new creature in God

"What a sweet joy it is to think that the Good Lord is just, that is to say that He takes into account our weaknesses, that He knows perfectly well the fragility of our nature. So what would I be afraid of? »

Saint Therese of the Child Jesus and of the Holy Face accompany me on this path of spiritual growth and holiness, being turned towards our Almighty God of love and so merciful.

Almighty and eternal God, Christ our Passover, was sacrificed for us, that we might become children of light for eternal life.

Through his death we were freed from death, not to perform exceptional feats, but to become new creatures by lovingly fulfilling our daily tasks.

The most humble task done in your presence, Lord, acquires infinite value in your eyes whenever it is done out of love for You. You simply want us to perform ordinary tasks, throughout our days, extraordinarily well. And it is love alone that transfigures them.

Beloved Father, grant me the grace to become, in the image of your Son, "meek and humble of heart". To advance more rapidly on this little path, grant me to do everything with love.

May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Your divine Son and my Mother, please assist me all along my journey on the path of spiritual childhood.

From today I wish to "walk in your presence", beloved Father, through the merits of your divine Son, with whom you live and reign in the unity of the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. Amen

Daily Prayers

Seventh day of novena - Saint Teresa, all love

"There are souls on earth who seek happiness in vain. But for me, it's just the opposite. Joy is in my heart. This joy is not ephemeral. I possess it, happy...

Believing oneself imperfect and finding others perfect, that is happiness...
To love is to give everything and to give oneself...

Jesus, your ineffable image is the star that guides my steps. Ah! You know it, your sweet face is for me heaven here below. My love discovers the charms of your face embellished with tears. I smile through my tears, when I contemplate your pain..."

St. Teresa, you familiarly called your heavenly Father: "Daddy, the good Lord", as you also called your heavenly Mother: "Mother".

Obtain for me that filial spirit of adoption which is at the heart of the life of prayer. May I know how to turn to heaven with the same love and trust that you had.

Lord, may the contemplation of Your Holy Face, bruised throughout Your Way of the Cross, strengthen in me humility, total abandonment to Your holy will, my unreserved trust in Your mercy, the primacy of love, in all things, in my relations with every person, known or unknown.

Lord Jesus, you have revealed to us in your Father the most tender of fathers.

May I discover him more and more through personal prayer, in his goodness and mercy, in his infinite love for me.

Teach me to take refuge, through prayer, in the arms of this Father whom I love from the bottom of my heart while adoring Him, and who loves me infinitely, as your Cross erected on the world testifies.

May a life of prayer, from now on more fervent, inspire in me an ever greater love of the Eucharist - the supreme sign of your love - in which I want to lose myself through fusion, like a drop of water in the ocean. Amen.

Daily Prayers

Eighth day of the novena - Saint Teresa, lover of the Word

"Jesus, my only Love, at the foot of your Calvary, whom I love every night throwing flowers at you! By stripping the spring rose for you, I would like to wipe your tears. Throwing flowers is to offer you in the first fruits The lightest sighs, the greatest pains... »

Saint Teresa, reading the Holy Scriptures was your delight. It is in the Bible that I can find the pearls that will speak to my heart. By teaching me, by feeding me the Word will make me grow. Help me, St. Therese, to read the Bible regularly and thereby let God join me. For in the Word it is God who gives Himself.

Most Holy Trinity, you who have been revealed by Sacred Scripture, the Word of God, inspire me with an ever stronger and more ardent love of the Bible.

It is the book of life which contains all the "science of love". May it be my "inner Master", as it was for Therese.

Make me a docile and loving disciple of this Inner Master. He teaches me to progress on the small path in which I have embarked without return. Like Therese, may I learn to accumulate the treasures of Scripture, like precious pearls, in my memory, so that I can live from them, extracting them opportunely, whenever I need them for myself and others. In the Gospel Jesus speaks to me. Therese said of the Gospel: "This book is enough for me. How sweet it is to learn nothing more than from the mouth of Jesus! »

Holy Spirit, Spirit of love and life, grant me the gift that you so generously gave to Therese, that of interpreting the Books of Sacred Scripture: "It was said that these divine Books no longer had any hidden meaning for her, so much so that she knew how to discover all their beauty".

Grant me this gift to enlighten my own life, the lives of my loved ones, the lives of every soul you put in my path, so that I may become, like Therese, an angel of peace and charity.

Daily Prayers

Day nine of the novena - Saint Teresa, the greatest saint of modern times

"I can therefore, in spite of my smallness, aspire to holiness. Growing up is impossible, but I want to find a way to go to heaven by a straight, short and new way. And I read: If anyone is very small, let him come to me. So I came.

Oh! I would like to sing, Mary, why I love you. Why your sweet name makes my heart tremble. And why the thought of your supreme greatness Cannot frighten my soul. If I were to look upon thee in thy glorious glory... And surpassing the radiance of all the blessed... »

The Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of your divine Son, shows us how to divinize our daily life in this way: She cleaned her house, she cleaned her house, she tidied up her modest belongings; she welcomed Jesus and Joseph on their return from work; she helped a neighbour whenever necessary; she did the thousand little things that make up the life of a housewife. She did them out of love.

It was the same with Therese, the humble little Carmelite; she devoted herself, day after day, to the seemingly insignificant tasks of her little cloistered life. She devoted herself to them out of love, "to please Jesus, as if the perfection of the Order depended on her personal conduct".

Lord, grant me this great grace, a true path of holiness, to do extraordinarily well the ordinary things of my life, and to do them in Your presence, out of love for You and for those around me. It is by doing so that I will obey the two commandments of love which sum up all the others. And that I will reflect on my neighbor your holiness alone.

Lord Jesus, on the Cross, just before handing over your soul to your Father, you gave us your Mother so that she may also be the Mother of your brothers and friends, our Mother. You gave us, with her, a treasure of infinite value.

Therese was ten years old when she was healed by your most holy Mother: "She smiled at me... "She was instantly cured of a long and serious illness in which she suffered from nervous tremors, fits of fear and hallucinations.

Later she would say: "I understood that she was watching over me, that I was her child. »

Grant me, Lord Jesus, that same understanding. May my life, like Therese's, become intimate at all times with your most holy Mother; "I hide nothing from her, I tell her everything. "On her bed of suffering Therese confided: "I can no longer look at the Blessed Virgin without weeping. »

Mary is the shortcut that leads most easily to Her divine Son. Jesus burns to lead souls to His Father.

So on the "little way" that leads most surely to the heavenly Father, may I take this shortcut full of gentleness, following the example of Therese.

May I, following the example of Therese, learn to dialogue tenderly with you, Mary, my beloved Mother.

And in great intimacy, like every child with its mother, "I very often ask the Blessed Virgin to tell the good Lord that He does not have to be shy with me. It is she who does all my errands," Teresa confided at the very end of her life.

A mother always intervenes on behalf of her children. May I never forget that in the Lord's presence I have the most powerful intercessor.

O Mary, my most holy Mother, lead me on the little Theresian way that I have chosen for my path of holiness, intercede for me before the Lord, so that I may grow there unceasingly in the likeness of your son Jesus, "meek and humble of heart". Amen.

Daily Prayers

Prayer of St. Teresa for Priests

O Jesus, Eternal High Priest, keep your priests under the protection of your Sacred Heart, where no one can harm them.

Keep their consecrated hands, which daily touch your Sacred Body, without stain. Keep their lips, which are impregnated with your Precious Blood, pure.

Keep pure and detached their hearts, which are marked with the sublime seal of your glorious Priesthood.

Make them grow in love and fidelity to You; protect them from the contamination of the spirit of the world. Give them with the power to change bread and wine, the power to change hearts. Bless their labors with abundant fruit; one day give them the crown of eternal life. So be it. Saint Therese of Lisieux (1873-1897)

Offering of Myself as a Holocaust Victim to the Merciful Love of the Good Lord

O my God! Blessed Trinity, I desire to Love you and make you Love, to work for the glorification of the Holy Church by saving the souls on earth and delivering those who suffer in Purgatory.

I desire to fulfil your will perfectly, to reach the degree of glory that you have prepared for me in your kingdom, in a word I desire to be Holy. But I feel my helplessness and I ask you O my God! To be yourself my Holiness. Since you have loved me, to the point of giving me your only Son to be my Savior and my Spouse, the infinite treasures of his merits are mine, I offer them to you with happiness, begging you to look at me only through the Face of Jesus and in his Heart burning with Love.

I still offer you all the merits of the Saints (who are in heaven and on earth), their acts of Love and those of the Holy Angels; finally I offer you, O Blessed Trinity! The Love and merits of the Blessed Virgin, my beloved Mother, it is to her that I abandon my offering, asking her to present it to you. Her Divine Son, my beloved husband, in the days of his mortal life told us: "Whatever you ask my Father in my name he will give you!"

I am certain that you will grant my wishes. I know it, O my God! The more you want to give, the more you make people want. I feel in my heart immense desires and it is with confidence that I ask you to come and take possession of my soul.

Ah, I cannot receive holy Communion as often as I wish, but, Lord, aren't you Almighty? Remain in me, as in the tabernacle, never depart from your little host...

I would like to console you from the ingratitude of the wicked and I beg you to take away from me the freedom to displease you. If by weakness, I fall sometimes, let your Divine Gaze purify my soul at once, consuming all my imperfections, like the fire which transforms all things into itself...

I thank you O my God! For all the graces you have granted me, especially for having made me pass through the crucible of suffering. It is with joy that I will contemplate you on the last day, carrying the sceptre of the Cross; since you have deigned to give me this precious Cross to share, I hope in heaven to resemble you and to see the sacred stigmata of your Passion shine on my glorified body...

After the exile from earth, I hope to go to enjoy you in the Fatherland, but I do not want to amass merits for heaven, I want to work for your Love alone, with the sole aim of pleasing you, consoling your Sacred Heart and saving souls who will love you eternally.

In the evening of this life, I will appear before you empty-handed, for I am not asking you, Lord, to count my works. All our justices have stains in your eyes. I therefore want to clothe myself with your own righteousness, and receive from your Love the eternal possession of Yourself. I want no other Throne and Crown than You, O my Beloved!

In your eyes time is nothing, a single day is like a thousand years, so in an instant you can prepare me to appear before you...

In order to live in an act of perfect Love, I offer myself as the victim of a holocaust to your Merciful Love, begging you to consume me unceasingly, letting overflow in my soul, the floods of infinite tenderness which are enclosed in you, and thus I become Martyrdom of your Love, O my God !

May this Martyr, after having prepared me to appear before you, finally make me die and may my soul set out without delay, in the eternal embrace of Your Merciful Love...

I want, oh my Beloved, at each beat of my heart, to renew this offering to you an infinite number of times until, the shadows having vanished, I can repeat my Love to you again in an Eternal Face to Face....
