My God, when I consider what you are and what I am, the sins of which I am guilty, and what you have done to redeem me, I cannot sufficiently admire the riches of mercy.
How can it be, God, that you who are the most perfect of beings, the master of the world, the Creator of the Universe, before whom the Angels are not pure enough, have kindly not only preserved me of so many accidents to which my nature is subject, but still send your Son, your only one, to acquire me salvation and life, when I only deserved condemnation and death?
How can it be that you not only made him take a nature like mine, the base form of a servant; but even that you exposed him to a shameful and cruel death, for me, miserable creature, who offended you in so many ways?
How can it be that after having delivered him to death to redeem me, you still want me to nourish with his flesh and drink with his blood, to unite inseparably to him and to obtain immortal glory.
O God, how immense your mercy, how infinite your charity! When I then reflect on what you demand from those who approach your Sacred Table, namely, a sincere pain at having displeased him, a horror for all sins, a strong resolution to live in your fear, a strong faith , a firm hope, an ardent love, I find nothing more just, and I recognize that you do not ask of us anything which does not conform to our reason; but when I come to consider myself, my corruption, the imperfection of my repentance, of my faith and of my love, I am in a turmoil that I cannot express.
I am afraid to draw near to you, who are perfectly holy, for fear of being consumed by the ardor of your anger; I am afraid to go away from your table, for fear of depriving myself of the pledges of your love; I am afraid of taking my sentence; I am afraid of offending you by not coming to your Son's wedding; everything terrifies me, my unworthiness, my sins, your justice, my conscience.
In this trouble; have mercy on me, forgive me all my past sins, sanctify my soul, purify my heart, increase my faith, destroy in me the love of the world, and ignite me with love for you, oh Lord, that I may receive in your fable your dear Son and your Spirit, and the assurances of my peace, the germ of immortality, and the down payment of your inheritance.
May your Christ come and lodge with me, and may he come and make his eternal home with all his graces; may he live in me until he makes me live eternally in your Heaven. Amen.
