The donkey has always had a bad reputation. A symbol of ignorance, stubborn obstinacy ("stubborn as a donkey, donkey's head, donkey's packhorse"), wickedness, laziness and lust, the donkey was for a long time assimilated to the dark worlds, the forces of evil. For the Egyptians, who believed in an afterlife, the encounter with the red donkey could be fatal for the soul. Set, the murderer of Osiris, was often represented by a donkey. In the Middle Ages, the Devil was sometimes represented as a naked man with the head and hooves of a donkey.

Our ancestors attributed two different natures to the donkey, each of which opposes the other, even annihilating the other: ignorance and wisdom. Ignorant or omniscient, how can we differentiate between the bad and the good donkey when it appears in a dream? This is a delicate exercise. Most often, one must rely on the circumstances and context in which the donkey appears.

Riding a donkey, for example, is a sign of humility, insight, revelation and wisdom. Pulling a donkey by the bridle to make it go forward, or by the tail to make it go backward, is a bit like pulling the devil by the tail, according to the popular expression, in other words: a sign of difficulties, brakes, hindrances. A donkey with erect ears announces a beneficial event, while a donkey with low ears reveals a stagnant or bad situation, obstinacy, stubbornness, the force of inertia, the refusal of change, of evolution. The donkey can be the bearer of good news, of a renewal, of a change in the dreamer's life, as well as announcing a fault, or an infidelity, committed or suffered. But almost always, the presence of a donkey in a dream informs the dreamer of the necessity for him not to live in ignorance, or of an important element of which he must necessarily become aware.

From the twelfth century onwards, by mixing liturgy, worship and theatre, the "Feast of the Donkey" was created, which often coincided with Christmas Day, the day of the Winter Solstice, the day of the death and rebirth of the Sun and of light, symbolising the birth of Jesus for Christians. For Christians, the donkey in the Manger, the donkey of the Flight into Egypt or the donkey that Jesus rides when he enters Jerusalem, is not unlike a much more beneficial donkey figure that can be likened to that of the donkey that the Mesopotamian prophet Balaam was riding when, sent by the king of Moab to curse and drive out the Hebrews, Yahweh appeared to him and enjoined him to go and bless His people in His Name. Dionysus, the son of Zeus, whose name means "the twice-born", and whose myth no doubt inspired the four New Testament Evangelists, is also often represented riding a donkey. But the donkey of Balaam - whose legend tells us that she saw and heard the angel messenger of the God of the Jews before her master -, the donkey of Dionysus and the donkey of Jesus, are donkeys of a completely different nature. Symbol of humility, simplicity, poverty, deprivation, asceticism, truth, revelation, initiation, wisdom, it is a donkey possessing many beautiful virtues.

Dreaming of a donkey that you are feeding or caressing

You aspire to live more simply, to be what you are without pretence, to no longer hide behind appearances, to live in peace with yourself and with others. Or you will come to the aid of someone who may well be ungrateful.

Dreaming of riding a donkey

By showing modesty, patience and authenticity, you will obtain what is rightfully yours, you will do what you have to do, or you will simply reach your goal. Or, you will control your impulses perfectly.

Dreaming of riding a donkey you can't manage

You are trusting or trusting one or more people who are not worthy, or you are wrongly letting yourself be influenced by them. Or your personality is more complex than you think, or than you let on, but you will not be willing to listen, let alone follow the advice of others, and you will do as you please.

Dreaming of riding a donkey that refuses to move

You will lack confidence in yourself. Or, despite your will or desire to move forward, your situation will stagnate. This dream advises you to let go, to give up, to stop being stubborn, and even to change course if necessary. Or, you will be dealing with a very stubborn person, and you will probably waste your time and energy trying to force them to evolve, or to move, because they will not change, and will remain inert.
