The name given to this large and beautiful sea bird with its majestic flight is said to come from the Arabic al jattaz: the pelican. In Portuguese, this Arabic word gave alcatraz, the name given to the old prison in San Francisco Bay, which, like the bird, is perched on a rock. However, to create its French name, the Latin root albus, meaning 'white', was incorporated.
The female albatross has only one young per nest, a single egg that she incubates for three months in her nest perched on a high cliff. It is the king of migratory birds, flying at speeds of up to 80 kilometres an hour without flapping its wings, simply by exploiting the air currents. It is thus a rare phenomenon among birds that it can sleep while flying, or more exactly while gliding.
A bird of good omen
This natural phenomenon was especially appreciated by ancient sailors, who saw it as a bird of good omen, heralding good news or good weather. In their eyes, it was also a guide, a representation of the human soul, a living symbol of the quest for freedom and spiritual elevation. They readily believed that the soul of a sailor lost at sea, or swept away by it, was reincarnated in the body of an albatross, thus completing its journey to the heavens and the gods in this magical animal form.
Psychologically and psychically, because of its endurance and power of flight, the virginal whiteness of its plumage and the beauty of its body, and of course the fact that it is a migratory bird, the albatross present in a dream is a representation of the psyche free of all attachments, of the soul carried away by the power of the spirit. It is always a very beautiful dream, inviting the dreamer to reconnect with what is purest, noblest and most beautiful in him.
