Symbolism Bridge

The bridge

A bridge is a structure or construction that connects two opposite parts or sides over a gap, a watercourse, a gap. It is a passage and also a shortcut. The bridge is a link between two geographical places, between two peoples, between two cultures. It abolishes the border.

Symbolically, the bridge brings together opposites: heaven and earth, conscious and unconscious, earthly life and the beyond. When the bridge takes the form of an arch, and in particular a rainbow, it marks the alliance between the Uranian divinity and mankind.

In Genesis, the ark from above, the rainbow, is positioned above the ark from below, Noah's ark, which contains all life and navigates on the waters of Chthon. It is a hierogamy between Heaven and Earth that renews the creation of the world. Noah's ark represents the Phthonian bridge inverted in relation to the celestial bridge. It is the receptacle, the matrix. The two arches on top of each other are an image of the cosmic egg. As a passage, the bridge has two natures.

A symbol of transition and transformation, it marks a break between one state and another. It allows the passage to life (incarnation) but also the passage to the beyond through death. The bridge can be "perilous" and its width so thin that there is a great risk of crossing it, especially if it spans hell, as is the case in many religions, especially Islam. Yet it is the only path that leads to Heaven. The pope is a sovereign pontiff and holds this title from the Pontifex Maximus, the great builder of bridges, the title of the highest priest of Rome in pagan times. These pontiffs are the intermediaries between the spiritual and the material plane, between Heaven and Earth, between the world of the living and the afterlife.
