Litanies

Litanies are prayers characterised by the chanted repetition of intercessory requests. These intercessory requests are generally addressed to the Virgin Mary, the Sacred Heart or the Saints and are intended to solicit their intercession with God.

When to recite the litanies and what are they for?

The litanies are generally recited individually, depending on the difficulty for which help is desired, in groups (in families or in prayer groups) and in certain solemn liturgical ceremonies of the Catholic Church.

The Litanies of the Saints for example, are sung during the Easter Vigil, during baptism ceremonies, priestly or episcopal ordinations and on the feast of the Saints (All Saints).

The prayer of the Litany is foreseen, in particular, during the Easter Vigil, before the blessing of the baptismal water, and also during the celebration of baptism and ordinations to the sacred order of the episcopate, presbyterate and diaconate, as well as in the rite of the consecration of virgins and of religious profession in the rite of dedication of a church and an altar, during rogations, during Masses with stations and during penitential processions, to order the Evil One away in exorcisms, and finally to recommend the dying to the mercy of God.

The Litany of the Saints, which contains elements from both liturgical tradition and popular piety, illustrates the Church's trust in the intercession of the Saints, and highlights her experience of the communion that unites the Church in the heavenly Jerusalem and the Church still on pilgrimage on earth. It is permitted to invoke in the Litany of the Saints the names of those listed in the liturgical calendars of dioceses and religious institutes.

It is evident that it is forbidden to insert in the Litanies the names of persons whose cult is not recognised.

Chaplet

According to the Larousse, the rosary is an object of devotion consisting of a sort of necklace of threaded grains, which one passes successively through one's fingers, reciting certain prayers, in particular, among Catholics, the Creed, the Pater and the Hail Mary.

The rosary is used in various religious traditions (under different names). It is used to count prayers recited repeatedly while shelling grains.

Novena

A novena is a prayer that is done in 9 successive days. Through this type of prayer, one asks through the intercession of a saint, an angel, the Virgin Mary or directly to God himself, a favour. Numerous testimonies throughout the world show the effectiveness of novenas when they are made with strong faith.

Saint Theresa of Lisieux

Considered the greatest saint of the 20th century, Saint Therese of Lisieux (from her family name Therese Martin), was born on 2 January 1873 in Alençon (Orne) in France. She died at the age of 24, on 30 September 1897 in Lisieux (Calvados), France.

After the death of Thérèse Martin's mother when she was 4 years old, her father, Louis Martin, moved to Lisieux in 1877 to the house of Les Buissonnets where Thérèse spent her childhood.

Thérèse entered the Carmelite convent in Lisieux in 1889 at the age of 15 and, despite her extreme youth, reached the heights of the mystical life. Out of obedience, at the behest of her superior, she wrote down her memories in which she inserted her doctrine.

Therese thus recounted the stages of this ascent in her "History of a Soul", revealing, at the same time as the ardour of her faith, an astonishing knowledge of the scriptures and theology. This book, published one year after his death, has been translated into more than 60 languages. Thanks to it, the whole world discovered the great qualities of his character and the mystery of his inner life with God.

In this book, the "little way" of St. Therese teaches us how to achieve and attain holiness in daily life, not through extraordinary acts but through the monotony of small sacrifices offered to God for love.

Therese died at the age of 24, on 30 September 1897, of tuberculosis, in the Carmelite convent in Lisieux, where she had entered at the age of 15. Her tomb attracted the faithful and miraculous events were soon attributed to her intercession.

After a regular trial in the Court of Rome, Therese Martin was beatified on 29 April 1923. Her remains were exhumed from the cemetery where they had lain for 26 years and brought back to the Carmel of Lisieux.

In 1925, she was recognised as a saint by Pope Pius XI under the name of Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus and of the Holy Face, and two years later, proclaimed Patroness of the Missions. Since 1944, Saint Theresa has been the Secondary Patroness of France.

In 1997, on the centenary of her death, Pope John Paul II declared Saint Therese a Doctor of the Church.
