The tree is the symbol of the incarnate being, of the living, thinking and acting human being, of manifested life. The tree is alive, and according to many beliefs dating back to the dawn of time, our ancestors saw in it a kind of vegetable human being. If the dreamer sees himself lying at the foot of a tree or asleep under one, this is a sign of protection.

In his dream, the closer his head is to the trunk, the stronger the protection he receives. In the event of illness, if his head is resting against the trunk, it augurs a speedy recovery. Climbing a tree, or coming down from one, often reveals a quest in the dreamer, a thirst to learn, to discover, but also to refocus, to go to the essential as far as he is concerned. On the other hand, falling from a tree indicates that, in his real life, the time is ripe and that he must act without further delay.

If he stands on a branch, he is like a bird on a branch, as the saying goes, in other words, in an uncomfortable or unstable situation. If he is picking fruit, or gathering fruit at the foot of the tree, the dreamer is about to reap the fruits of his efforts or actions. A dead tree confronts him with a reality, a situation in his life, or sometimes a feeling that he dwells on, but which, apparently, no longer has a reason to exist.

If we visit the myths and beliefs of the different civilisations of Antiquity, we discover that the legends relating to the multiple gods populating the celestial world allude to one or other of them, emerging from a tree, from its trunk, appearing in its branches or on one of them. For example, according to the mythical accounts of ancient Egypt, the god Horus, the Lord of Heaven, whose name literally means the "Far One", appeared on Earth in an acacia tree.

Ra, the Sun, was enthroned in the east on a sycamore tree. The goddess Hathor, the Sacred Cow, creator of the world, goddess of Love, Joy and Music, like Ra, sat on a sycamore tree, but this time at sunset. In Greece, the tree of Zeus was the oak, that of Apollo the olive tree. In Eridu, the holy city of the Mesopotamian god Ea, stood the black Kiskanu, a sacred tree whose roots, planted at the centre of the world, made up the dwelling place of Ea, god of Agriculture, Writing and the Arts, and of his divine mother, Bau, goddess of Fertility and Cattle.

The tree of good and evil

The first writers of the Bible were inspired by this mythical tree, which they transplanted into the setting of the famous Paradise described in the Genesis account. The Black Kiskanu became the Tree of Good and Evil, or the Tree of Knowledge (agriculture, writing and the arts clearly being the three pillars of the birth of civilisation), rooted in the centre of the Garden of Eden by Yahweh. The Tree of Life, the cosmic axis of the world where a divine or spiritual entity sits, is a recurring theme in the beliefs of the peoples of the world. Even today, the Tatars of the Altai, drawing on a tradition and rites dating back thousands of years, affirm that on the navel of the Earth, at the centre of everything, grows the largest of the earth's trees, a gigantic fir whose summit touches the abode of the Great God.

The posture of the pear tree

Ancient man was inspired by the many similarities or analogies between the tree and the human being. Thus, according to the Bhagavad-Gîtâ, the most famous text of the Mahâbhârata, which can be considered as the Bible of Hinduism: "One must cut Açvatta with its powerful roots, then seek the place from which one does not return." (Baghavad-Gîtâ, XV, 1-3). According to beliefs dating back to the pre-Aryan Indus civilisation, the roots of the Azvatta, the cosmic tree, reach deep into the sky, while its branches and leaves cover the earth. It is an upside-down tree with many similarities to man. Thus, when practising shirshasana or headstand - known as the pear tree pose in the West - the yogi puts himself in the situation of the tree whose roots plunge into the depths of the Earth, drawing from it its vital energies, from which the sap, the source of the tree's life, is gradually formed.

The body of the tree and the body of the human being

Such ancestral beliefs underline the analogies between the body of the tree and that of the human being: the roots correspond to the head, the branches to the limbs, the trunk to the torso, the heart to the heart, and the thoughts and actions of man to the leaves and fruits of the tree. Another culture, same beliefs, according to the Sefer ha-Zohar or Book of Splendour (a treatise attributed to Rabbi Simeon Bar Yochai, a Jewish mystic of the second century, but which has come down to us in the transcription of Moses de Leon, a Spanish kabbalist of the fourteenth century): "The Tree of Life stretches from the top to the bottom, it is the sun that illuminates everything."

Dream of a tree in spring

Entering a new cycle of your life, you will be able to take action, undertake, or achieve something new, and that is close to your heart. Or you may have a renewed sense of hope, imagination, enthusiasm and vigour. Or, if the tree you dreamed of was in bloom, you will experience great happiness.

Dream of a tree in summer

You will master, and happily exploit, all the assets at your disposal, your own qualities and the circumstances in which you find yourself. In other words, you will experience a period of fulfilment.

Dream of a tree in autumn

You are coming to the end of a cycle in your life, feeling the need, even the necessity, to strip yourself of everything that is now useless, vain, and of no interest. In doing so, you will reap what you have sown. Or, this dream promises you new wealth, profits, gains to come, but resulting exclusively from initiatives you have taken, or actions you have undertaken in the past.

Dream of a tree in winter

You will go through a period during which you will be lonely, left to yourself. You will have to rely only on yourself, make the most of your experience, grow psychologically or spiritually. Or, this dream announces a salutary ordeal, in that it will push you to evolve by exploiting your own resources.

Dream of an uprooted tree

You will break with your natural, family, social or cultural environment, for example by leaving your native country, the region of your childhood, or your parental home. Or the uprooted tree in your dream represents the symbolic death of a family member, for example when you cut off all relations with a family member, or become detached from them. Or sometimes, this dream announces the death of a person close to you, but it should not be systematically interpreted in this way.

Dream of a tree struck by lightning

This dream warns you that exacerbated relational tensions threaten to erupt in sudden violent and devastating anger. Or, an unexpected upheaval or accident affecting you personally or someone close to you is likely to occur.

Dream of a tree falling after being sawn or chopped down

You will be stopped dead in your tracks, or your plans will collapse. Or, after having eliminated a fixed idea, or having radically turned away from an objective that you were trying to achieve in vain, you will see things much more clearly, and you will be relieved (this is the "tree concealing the forest" so to speak).

Dream of a burning tree

You are currently in a climate of extreme tension and passion. You are burning up all your energies without mercy, literally consuming yourself and, of course, this could well be detrimental to your vital balance. Or, this dream may be the harbinger of a latent feverish state in which you find yourself, and which threatens to worsen. Do not neglect your health: preventive treatment is necessary.

Dream of a dead tree

You are referring to values, beliefs or convictions that are no longer relevant to you. Or you are clinging to the past without considering your present situation, cutting yourself off from all perspectives and projections into the future. You will probably have to turn a page in your life, otherwise your situation will not progress or change.

Dream of sheltering under a tree to protect yourself from the sun

You will lack confidence in yourself. Or you are afraid to show yourself as you are, or to be exposed. Or you may be overprotective, but sooner or later you will have to come out of your hiding place and show yourself in the open.

Dream of sheltering under a tree to protect yourself from the rain

You will be afraid to "get wet", in other words: to take risks, to go ahead, to act alone.  Or you will have a bad reflex, and you will not know how to take advantage of an opportunity, to seize an occasion.

Dream of sitting at the foot of a tree

You will be able to show wisdom, patience, relying on stable, deep, serious values, having proven themselves, to act or take an important decision. This good moral disposition will bear fruit in the short or long term. It should give you confidence.

Dream of climbing a tree, or of being perched on a tree, but being close to its trunk

Whatever happens, you will not lose touch with what you consider to be your true values, not allowing yourself to become intoxicated by social life or the outside world. Such a dream encourages you to continue your progress or evolution without fear.

Dream of being perched on the branch of a tree

Whatever conditions you are living in when you have such a dream, it warns you that, in reality, you are in an unstable, insecure, unreliable situation, "like a bird on a branch" as it were.

Dream of falling from a tree

You are going to make (or are making) a mistake, a blunder, or you are adopting a proud or prideful attitude that will not work out for you. Or, against all odds, you will lose a situation, or a position.
