This large diurnal bird of prey with an impressive wingspan had a feminine name in Latin: aquila from which derive the adjective aquilus, meaning "dark brown", "aquiline" used to designate a nose shaped like an eagle's beak, and "aquilon" or the north wind, whose power and sudden appearance are reminiscent of the eagle's soaring flight, "aquilon" or the north wind, whose power and sudden appearance are reminiscent of the eagle's lightning flight. It is a carnivore that captures snakes and field mice in its talons. It lives in pairs in its nesting area, and the female has only one young per nest. From time immemorial, humans have admired and feared the bird.

Nowadays, hunters and pesticides have nearly wiped it off the face of the earth, and its species is protected. Its presence in a dream symbolises the spirit in all its nobility and power, the great ideas and principles behind just and benevolent acts, and generous actions. Or, conversely, pride, presumption, power imposed by force, and the violence of irrepressible and destructive impulses, all of which you are, or would probably be, inclined to exhibit when the eagle appears in one of your dreams.

The Greeks, Hindus and Persians saw the eagle as a solar animal, the god bird, the royal bird par excellence. According to them, the eagle was gifted with a piercing sight, which made it clairvoyant, and it was the only bird, animal or living being that could look the Sun in the face. As an equal of the Sun, he was therefore considered the most beautiful of the stars by our ancestors. As a symbol of power, victory, triumph over the elements and invincible strength, the eagle could only be the envoy or messenger of the gods. Thus, it was identified with Zeus in Greece and with Christ in the West, but it was also seen as a personification of the angel, sometimes benevolent, sometimes threatening. Finally, as one of his favourite preys was the snake, he was still considered the conqueror of evil, the one who could annihilate it by ingesting it without dying.

Positive meanings

Its presence in a dream announces a success obtained thanks to personal qualities of courage, will, constructive strength imposed on others. In fact, the eagle has no connection with the luck or good fortune of the person who benefits from exceptionally favourable circumstances for the realisation of his or her wishes or desires. It promises success, achievement or, more exactly, victory to the person who has the will to fight, to impose his will, his superiority, his domination. However, the appearance of an eagle in a dream always suggests something a little overwhelming and violent that you should neither underestimate nor take lightly.

Similarly, the higher this beautiful bird flies in the sky of your dream, the more you will have to "live up" to the qualities it represents. Not everyone is an eagle. Its presence in a dream also sometimes represents penetrating intelligence, the ability to understand, to reason, to synthesize all the data of a problem to draw the best conclusion and the best profit. It thus alludes to the superiority of intelligence, to lucidity, to clairvoyance, to the piercing gaze of the one who, at a glance, sees everything, knows everything.

Negative meanings

But it also sometimes announces an upheaval, a conflict that suddenly breaks out, a situation in which you will find yourself suddenly destabilised, forced to fight or defend yourself, a fatal circumstance against which you will be able to do nothing, except show courage and exceptional moral strength to get out of it. In which case, the eagle in your dream is warning you that you are in imminent danger, of which you apparently have not yet become aware. Or it may be warning you of the intransigence, presumption or pride you are about to show without realising it.

According to Atemidorus: "To see an eagle resting on a rock, tree or eminence, is good for those who take action, but dangerous for the fearful. [...] An eagle that threatens announces the threats of a powerful man. If it is tamed, if it approaches, if it gives something, if it speaks with its own voice, it has been observed that this is favourable.
