Act of reparation

A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who in the solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus publicly recites the act of reparation (Iesu dulcissime); on other occasions the indulgence is partial.

Very sweet Jesus, You have poured out on men the benefits of your charity, and their ingratitude only responds to them by forgetting, neglect, contempt. So here we are prostrate before your altar, animated by the desire to repair by a special homage, their culpable indifference and the outrages with which, on all sides, they overwhelm your very loving Heart.

However, remembering that we ourselves have in the past been guilty of such unworthy conduct, and filled with deep sorrow, we first implore your mercy for ourselves. We are ready to repair, by voluntary expiation, the faults we have committed; also ready to atone for those who, strayed outside the path of salvation, persist in their infidelity, refusing to follow You, You their Shepherd and their Head, or, shaking off the yoke so sweet of your law, trample underfoot the promises of their baptism.

We would like to atone for so many lamentable faults, to make reparation for each of them: disorder of conduct, indecency of fashions, corrupting scandals of innocent souls, desecration of Sundays and feasts, execrable blasphemies against You and against Your Saints, insults to your Vicar and to your priests, abandonment and odiously sacrilegious violations of the divine Sacrament of your love, public sins finally of the nations which revolt against the rights and the authority of your Church.

Why can't we wipe out so much offense with our own blood! At least, to repair your outraged honor, we present to You the same satisfaction that You offered to your Father on the Cross and of which You renew the offering every day, on the altar; we present it to You, accompanied by all the satisfactions of the Blessed Virgin your Mother, of the Saints, of the faithful Christians. We promise you, with all our heart, as much as it depends on us and with the help of your grace, to repair our past faults, those of our neighbor, indifference, towards such a great love, by the firmness of our faith, the purity of our life, the perfect docility to the precepts of the Gospel, especially to those of charity. We also promise to make every effort to spare You from further offenses and to bring as many souls as possible after you.

Accept, we beseech You, O very good Jesus, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary Reparator, this spontaneous homage of atonement; keep us until death, steadfastly faithful to our duty and to your service, grant us this precious gift of perseverance which will finally lead us all to the homeland where, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, You reign, God, forever and ever. Amen.
