All prayers Prayers of Confession
Confession is the act of confessing a wrong that has been committed. Before God, it is the prayer that consists of declaring one’s sin, of naming one’s fault, by saying to Him: I have done this or that. It is certainly more painful to confess a failure than to humiliate oneself in a general way.
Leviticus chapter 5 (v. 5) is very instructive: the guilty person will confess what he has sinned in, after which only, the sacrifice can be offered for his purification. When a believer has sinned, he must confess it. 1 John 1:9 is very clear: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Note that it does not say to ask for forgiveness, but to confess our sin so that the enjoyment of this forgiveness may be granted to us by the restoration of the interrupted communion. The Lord is faithful and just in forgiving us what we confess, in virtue of the perfection and full sufficiency of His work.
This confession must be accompanied by a desire to be delivered from the snare into which we have fallen. “He that confesseth [his transgressions] and forsaketh them shall obtain mercy” (Prov. 28:13). Furthermore, we are exhorted to confess our faults to one another, in mutual trust and love, that through prayer God may work in restoring the one who has sinned (Jas. 5:15, 16). The Word mentions many men of God who have personally confessed the sin of the people, the people not being exercised to do so.
Conscious of their identification with the state of the whole, they declare this sin before God as also their own. Daniel prayed to the LORD his God and confessed, saying, “We have sinned, we have committed iniquity…” (Dan. 9:4, 5). Confession is another thing, which means an affirmation, a public declaration: “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved” (Rom. 10:9).
