All prayers Prayers of Worship

Worship is the act of worshipping. If the creature can be praised, worship is due only to God the Father and God the Son, exclusively. "He is thy Lord: worship him" (Ps. 45:11).

Therefore, it is improper to use this term with regard to our fellow men, and still more to things we love. When believers worship together—and this is their highest privilege—they are fulfilling the desire of God's heart, for, as the Lord is pleased to reveal to the Samaritan woman, the Father seeks worshipers who will worship him in spirit and in truth.

Worship, then, is a service granted to believers already here below, but which will constitute their perfect and unceasing activity throughout eternity. The child of God who worships, fills the office of a priest (which was reserved only for the family of Aaron), and, entering into the holy place by the new and living way consecrated for us through the veil, that is, the flesh of the Lord Jesus, he stands before God without conscience of sin, clothed with the righteousness and holiness of Christ.

Placed in this blessed position, before the golden altar, what does he offer? What can be the fragrance of his worship but the person of his Savior and Lord, whose glorious and infinite perfections constitute a pure and unmixed incense, pleasing to God. Indeed, the highest note of worship is the presentation to God of the excellency of the Son, for it fills His heart, as it fills ours.

David could say, "All things are of thee; and whatsoever cometh of thine hand we give thee" (1 Chron. 29:14). It is also to the extent that we have been occupied with Him each day that we will be able to deposit at the time of worship in assembly, filled baskets, expressing to Him what our hearts have composed about Him (Deut. 26:1-4; Ps. 45:1).

Worship can only be carried out collectively. We worship by the Spirit (Phil. 3:3). Thus, this appellation is not suitable for individual or family reading, any more than for any religious service. In relation to prayer, let us note that worship, as a disposition of the heart, does not belong exclusively to worship in assembly, because it always has its place in our prayers. The awareness of what the Lord is, of our position in Him before our God and Father will produce a constant worship, which will mark our prayers.
