The request or petition, in the proper sense of the word ‘prayer’, in which we set out our needs, asking God for what we lack.
As believers, we do not ask for what is already given to us in grace, what we have in Christ, such as peace with God or forgiveness of our sins, because for the believer, these things are acquired. On the other hand, we can ask that he grant us the enjoyment of them, that we taste their effects more and more. ‘Put your requests to God in prayer... and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus’ (Phil. 4:6). ‘If you ask anything in my name, I will do it’ (John 14:14).
