O Jesus, You charged Yourself, only out of love for us, with such a terrible passion. The justice of Your Father would have been weakened by Your mere sigh, and Your annihilation is solely the work of Your mercy and Your inconceivable love...

In the moment of Your agony on the cross, at that very moment, You gave us eternal life; by letting Your side open, You opened the inexhaustible fount of Your mercy; You gave us what You hold most dear: the blood and water of Your Heart. This is the almighty power of Your mercy, from it comes all grace for us. (Little Diary, 1747)

Mercy

Mercy comes from the Latin misereri which means to have mercy and cor (heart).

Mercy is the deep attitude of the being characterised by the loving disposition to forgive. Sensitivity to the misery and suffering of others and a fundamental benevolence towards one's neighbour. This is one of the attributes of God that explains his entire plan for the salvation of humanity.

God's goodness is infinite because it is one aspect of his mercy (Ps 86:5).
