for deceased Protection
God, who allows us to invoke you in all our afflictions, and who commands us to do so, you see us down today in this unfortunate time when your hand is wreaking such havoc, and your judgments are unfolding upon us. It is true, Lord, that we would rather fall into your hands than into the hands of men; yet we acknowledge that it is a terrible thing to be subject to your indignation; and though we admit that we have deserved the most severe punishment, yet we have recourse to mercy; and we have recourse to it through your Son, who has appeased your anger with his precious blood: for the love of him, look upon us with a calm eye, and let the light of your face shine upon us.
You promised that in a time of famine, when your people would call upon you fervently, you would hear them and put an end to their ills. It is in this confidence that we go to the throne of your grace. Behold, O Lord, the desolation of your inheritance! Death is mowing down thy children on every side; fathers and mothers are taken from among their families, and children are taken away from their fathers and mothers, husbands are separated from their dear companions, and wives from their husbands; all the streets are full of cries, and houses are full of the dead.
O God, wilt thou not have compassion on us in thine ears? Will they be closed to our cries, and will the exterminating Angel make our towns and villages so many cemeteries? Lord, the dead do not praise you, you are no longer remembered in the grave, but those who live will bless you. Give us back our life and health, and command your destroying Angel to stop striking, and preserve us, so that we may proclaim your wonders; We condemn ourselves to the truth before you, and we do not deny that we all deserve not only to lose this temporal life, but also to be exposed to the second death; we do not claim to justify ourselves, our conscience would accuse and condemn us if we were to undertake to absolve ourselves; but you see us in the firm resolution to make better use of our life, and to glorify you as much as we have offended you. Forgive us, O Lord, our past sins, and sanctify us, that we may commit no more: if thou findest it expedient to take our lives, prepare us for our end, and make us fit to die well, that we may be with thee for ever. Amen.
