Preparing to receive the Holy Spirit at Pentecost

Fifty days after Easter, Christians celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles through Pentecost. In Greek, pentêkostê means 'fiftieth'.
Before ascending to heaven (at the Ascension), Christ had announced to the apostles: "You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; then you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8).
Pentecost is linked to Easter and the Ascension. For Jesus died for the salvation of the world (on Good Friday), rose again (on Easter Day) and went to the Father (at the Ascension). At Pentecost, God the Father sends the Spirit of his Son to all people. This feast brings to a close the seven-week Easter season, of which it is the crowning glory.
Let us prepare our hearts to welcome the power of the Holy Spirit with all our lives! Fear of God, godliness, knowledge, strength, counsel, understanding and wisdom are the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit that we ask for with faith and trust.
